In Quest of…………………………
Thanks for checking out my website. It’s my hope that I can share some knowledge, insight, humorous stories, recipes and opinions with you concerning Russia, perhaps having the end result of helping through my own experiences and mistakes.
I will try not to make this a site concerning political views, with the exception of ones that may help you; otherwise my next site will be “an American that got kicked out of Russia.com”. I’ll try to keep things humorous and not so serious.
So, what is this “In Quest of…..” heading all about? Well, in my opinion, there are only a few reasons why an American would leave the States to live here; banishment from the U.S., company transfer, evangelizing, a sense of adventure, a woman or else the fact that you are a loser. I like to think that the “woman” and “sense of adventure applies to me.
I’ve been here for ten years already, so I’m certainly not a recent arrival who will compare everything here to the States and find it wanting. However, it’s impossible to not see things elsewhere through the eyes of your own culture; the trick is to not think in terms of “good” or “bad”, but rather to think of things as different.
As a guest here, I’ll try not to make things sound insulting, but rather have people see everyday things through a different set of eyes. The truth be told; a country is really the sum of its people, and I’ve met so many wonderful people here who have changed my life in positive ways. But, every culture is unique and the things that make them unique should be understood in order to understand the people better.
Anyhow, please read through this site and hopefully some of the information will be helpful to you.

Reports: Starving bears eat 2 men in Russia
MOSCOW – A pack of enormous bears searching for food killed and ate two men at mines in Russia’s Pacific Kamchatka region and have kept hundreds of geologists and miners from reaching the mine, news agencies reported Wednesday.
A pack of up to 30 Kamchatka bears — which are similar to grizzlies — prowled around two mines of a local platinum mining company where they killed the two guards on Thursday, local officials were quoted by the Russian ITAR-Tass news agency as saying.
About 400 company workers have refused to return to the mines for fear of the bears, which stand 10 feet tall on their hind legs and weigh up to 1,500 pounds, Interfax reported.
About 10 bears have also been seen near the village of Khailino sniffing fish remains and other garbage.
Village official Viktor Leushkin was quoted by ITAR-Tass as saying that a team of hunters will be dispatched to shoot or chase off the bears.
“These predators have to be destroyed,” Leushkin was quoted as saying. “Once they kill a human, they will do it again and again.”
Rampant fish poaching in the Kamchatka tundra often forces the bears to seek other sources of food, such as garbage. Bears frequently attack humans in the scarcely populated peninsula region.
Life in Russia is many things, but boring is not one of them.
